Cody Groeber is a shareholder in the Saxton & Stump Investigations, White Collar and Criminal Defense, Business Litigation and Strategic Solutions and Title IX groups, based in the firm’s Charleston office. With nearly two decades of experience, he represents clients in complex litigation and federal criminal investigations, offering strategic counsel at every stage of a case. Cody has defended individuals and entities in high-stakes matters involving allegations of white-collar fraud, murder, false records, tax fraud, robbery, and more.
Before joining Saxton & Stump, Cody spent 10 years as an assistant federal public defender in the U.S. District Court for the District of South Carolina, where he appeared in court three to five times a week, litigated suppression motions, handled trials and appeals, and filed federal habeas claims. His advocacy has led to government case dismissals mid-trial and even a rare request from the U.S. Supreme Court for a government response to a certiorari petition – ultimately resulting in a successful sentence reduction for his client.
Cody began his legal career in public service at the Charleston County and Berkeley County public defender offices. In Berkeley County, he served as a deputy public defender, managing a staff of 10 and leading the defense on nearly 100 criminal cases in two years.
He earned his J.D., cum laude, from the University of Notre Dame Law School, where he served as executive editor of the Notre Dame Journal of Law, Ethics & Public Policy, and his B.A., cum laude, from Furman University.
