Lancaster Bar Association honors four Saxton & Stump attorneys for service to legal community

LANCASTER, Pa., May 13, 2022 —The Lancaster Bar Association has honored four Saxton & Stump attorneys with prestigious awards for their work. At its member dinner on May 12, the bar association awarded the Hon. Lawrence F. Stengel (Ret.) with the 2020 Achievement Award in recognition of his long and distinguished career as a Lancaster Bar Association (LBA) member. The LBA also recognized associates Kiandra D. Steffy, Jaskirat K. Chhatwal and Lance D. Greene with the association’s President’s Award.

“We’re always extremely proud of the public service our professionals perform that exhibits their commitment and passion,” Saxton & Stump CEO James Saxton said. “Judge Stengel has been an integral part of Lancaster’s legal community for almost 40 years, and we have benefited immensely from his experience and unique insight into so many areas of the law. And the work that Kiandra, Kira and Lance achieved has created an important tool for understanding the history of racial discrimination within the legal system. The recognition from the bar association for these four is very well-deserved.”

Judge Stengel is chair of Saxton & Stump’s Internal Investigations Group, and prior to that he was the chief judge of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. He had been a judge at the Lancaster County Court of Common Pleas from 1990 to 2004 before being nominated and confirmed as a judge with United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. In 2017, he was named chief judge of the court before retiring in 2018 and joining Saxton & Stump shortly thereafter. He has also served as president of the Lancaster Bar Association and helped to launch the Lancaster Law Foundation.

Steffy, Chhatwal and Greene received the bar association’s President’s Award for their work on the continuing legal education project titled, “The History of Slavery and Discrimination.” The four-part webinar series ran from April to June in 2021. Steffy and Chhatwal were presenters for part one of the series, “The Institution of Slavery: A Closer Look at America’s Original Sin” and Greene was a presenter for part four of the series, “The Civil Rights Movement: The Struggle to End Legalized Discrimination.” Steffy is the chair of the Lancaster Bar Association’s Diversity Committee, Greene is the vice chair and Chhatwal is the treasurer.
