An important tax filing date looms for many truckers across the country.
The IRS recently reminded truckers that the Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax is due Sept. 3, applicable to highway vehicles with a gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more that operated in July 2024. Those truck owners need to file Form 2290 by the due date.
The usual, annual due date of Aug. 31 is being pushed to Sept. 3 because Aug. 31 falls on a Saturday and Sept. 3 is the next business day.
The taxable period is July 1, 2024, to June 30, 2025. Anyone that used a qualifying truck on a highway in June 2024 is required to file Form 2290 and pay the tax. For vehicles with an expected use of 5,000 miles or less (7,500 for farm vehicles), a return is required, but there is no tax due.
The IRS is encouraging truck owners to file the form electronically, and owners of 25 or more trucks must file electronically.
If you have questions about whether your truck qualifies for the Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax, the IRS has devised a test you can take to determine whether you need to pay the tax.
