The past month saw another short meeting for the Pennsylvania State Board of Funeral Directors and the appointment of a new board member.
At its Sept. 18 meeting, the board approved a consent agreement resolving charges that funeral director Charles Kirby failed to disclose criminal convictions on license renewal applications. Kirby’s funeral director license was placed on probation for six months, and he agreed to pay a $2,000 fine.
The board also discussed the potential for split funeral director and embalmers licenses, noting that about half the states have dual licenses and that New Jersey is currently considering such a proposal. Board regulatory counsel reminded members that the Pennsylvania General Assembly would need to pass legislation addressing any change to the license structure.
The board reiterated that it would consider the initial draft of its general revisions package of regulations at its Oct. 30 meeting.
On Oct. 9, the Pennsylvania Senate confirmed Chad Lutz as a new professional member of the board. Lutz has been a licensed funeral director in the state since 1999 and currently works at Etzweiler Funeral Home in York.
