Update: USPS offers new box for cremated remains

Following criticism of increased shipping costs for the newly required cremated remains shipping box, the U.S. Postal Service introduced a smaller version of the approved parcel.

The new boxes are about 30% smaller than the originally approved boxes. The smaller boxes will cut down on shipping costs, which was a common complaint from funeral homes, crematories, and keepsake manufacturers.

Starting March 1, the USPS began requiring all cremated remains, as well as any items made from cremated remains, to be shipped in a Priority Mail Express Cremated Remains box, available only in a 14¾ x 10¼ ” x 10” size.

The kits now include the new, smaller 9⅝ ” x 7¾” x 6¼” approved box. The smaller boxes are now available on the U.S. Postal Store website and through click-n-ship.
