The U.S. Postal Service has changed the way cremated remains must be shipped. USPS, the only shipper that will ship cremated remains, announced that cremated remains must be shipped in the USPS branded “Priority Mail Express Cremated Remains” box.
This rule applies not just to human and animal remains, but also any items made from cremated remains, such as jewelry, stones, blown glass, and other keepsakes.
Boxes are free, but must be ordered through the USPS Postal Store. Cremated Remains Kit 1 comes with the required box and a roll of Priority Mail Express tape. Cremated Remains Kit 2 also includes bubble wrap, a self-sealing plastic bag, and a copy of the “How to Package and Ship Cremated Remains” pamphlet.
Boxes, cremated remains labels, and the kits will not be available at post offices. Up to five kits at a time may be ordered through the Postal Store website. Larger orders can be placed by calling Victory Packaging customer service at 800-610-8734.
Extra services such as return receipt, insurance, signature required, and signature waived may still be added to the mailing.
