Three Saxton & Stump attorneys complete Title IX compliance training
Saxton & Stump attorneys Carrie E. Evans, Morgan S. Hays and Kiandra D. Steffy have completed the Student Conduct Institute’s 2020-2021 Title IX Compliance Training, which is specifically designed for those conducting Title IX investigations and participating in sexual misconduct grievance processes. The combined experience of this team includes criminal prosecution and defense, representation on higher education student conduct boards and internal investigations. With SCI’s training, its members are well-prepared to handle the complexities and sensitivities surrounding campus investigations.
Earlier this year, the U.S. Department of Education issued final regulations, making sweeping changes to Title IX’s due process requirements and to the Title IX definition of sexual harassment. The regulations, which went into effect on August 14, require that individuals involved with the facilitation of a resolution receive training on matters including the definition of sexual harassment, how to act impartially and, as applicable, how to conduct an investigation, what facts are relevant for an investigative report, how to conduct hearings and how to facilitate an informal resolution process.
Saxton & Stump is a SUNY Student Conduct Institute Participating Institution which gives the firm’s attorneys access to regular training on how to fairly and equitably investigate and adjudicate conduct violations and disclosures.
Saxton & Stump’s Title IX team is led by Hon. Lawrence F. Stengel (Ret.), former Chief Judge for the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. The team has experience providing investigative services to public and private higher education institutions as well as advice on complying with their obligations under Title IX, which protects students from sexual harassment and assault.
In addition to conducting investigations, Saxton & Stump’s team can advise higher education institutions on forming policies and procedures to maintain Title IX compliance under the new regulations, protect students’ rights and safety and avoid crisis situations. The firm’s internal investigators, adjudicators and appellate attorneys are well equipped to support Pennsylvania schools as they navigate Title IX complaint and hearing process requirements.
