Alice F. Paylor, Esq.

Shareholder

Alice Paylor practices in the firm’s Charleston office, where she brings over four decades of experience in representing businesses, governmental entities and individuals in complex commercial litigation, probate and estate litigation, zoning issues, labor and employment matters and investigations.

A fixture of the Charleston legal community, Alice served as Deputy Corporation Counsel for the City of Charleston prior to joining a prominent Charleston firm as an associate in 1982. She became a shareholder and spent the next four decades practicing law and building the firm in various management roles. She has been involved in many high profile complex matters, including representing the Charleston County School District in one of the last school desegregation cases in the 1980s, the United Food and Commercial Workers Union in a SLAPP action brought by Food Lion, and The Beach Company in a major planning and zoning appeal, in which she successfully challenged the City of Charleston’s Board of Architectural Review’s attempts to “rezone” the Sergeant Jasper site in Charleston and to prevent its redevelopment. She also has significant experience working with school districts, private schools and charter schools.

Alice has served in many leadership roles in the South Carolina Bar and American Bar Association.  She was President of the South Carolina Bar during the 2013-14 year, after serving in various other positions including the Chair of the House of Delegates.  She was a member of the Executive Committee of the National Conference of Bar Presidents for three (3) years and served as a South Carolina State Delegate to the American Bar Association (ABA) House of Delegates for four (4) years. In 2021, the American College of Trial Lawyers (“ACTL”) inducted Alice as a Fellow, and she has recently been named a member of the South Carolina State Committee of the ACTL.
