The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) has announced dates for several annual commercial motor vehicle inspection campaigns set to take place in 2023. The CSVA inspects approximately 4 million vehicles over the course of a year in North America. Their campaigns are aimed to ensure the large trucks and buses driving on roadways are operating safely in The United States and Canada. Here are some of the dates you should know for this year’s campaigns:
International Roadcheck
May 16 — 18, 2023: International Roadcheck is an annual three-day event when CVSA-certified inspectors conduct compliance, enforcement and educational initiatives targeted at various elements of motor carrier, vehicle and driver safety. This is the largest targeted enforcement program on commercial motor vehicles in the world. The focus for this year’s roadcheck is on anti-lock braking systems (ABS) and cargo securement. Operation Safe Driver Week
July 9 — 15, 2023: During Operation Safe Driver Week, law enforcement agencies across North America engage in heightened traffic safety enforcement and education aimed at combating unsafe driving behaviors by both commercial motor vehicle and passenger-vehicle drivers. Activities are held across the United States, Canada and Mexico with the goal of increasing commercial vehicle and non-commercial vehicle traffic enforcement, safety belt enforcement, driver roadside inspections and driver regulatory compliance.
Brake Safety Week
Aug. 20 — 26, 2023: During the brake safety enforcement campaign, CMV inspectors will conduct brake system inspections (primarily Level IV Inspections) on large trucks and buses throughout North America to identify out-of-adjustment brakes and brake-system violations. The week is an annual outreach and enforcement campaign designed to improve commercial vehicle brake safety throughout North America. More than 3.4 million brakes have been inspected since the program’s start in 1998.
Unannounced one-day brake safety enforcement initiative
The 2022 brake safety day happened on April 27, 2022 and could happen at any time during 2023 for this year’s checkup. During this undisclosed one-day effort, CMV inspectors will conduct brake system inspections (primarily Level IV Inspections) on large trucks and buses throughout North America to identify out-of-adjustment brakes and brake-system violations. During last year’s one-day brake safety initiative, 1,290 commercial motor vehicles with brake-related critical vehicle inspection item violations were removed from the road out of 9,132 commercial motor vehicles inspected that day. Making the brake-related out-of-service rate, 14.1%.
