Andrew L. Oltmans is a seasoned intellectual property attorney with over 26 years of experience in various areas of IP law. Currently, as chair of Saxton & Stump’s Intellectual Property group, Andrew leads a team focused on intellectual property and business strategy, preparation and prosecution of all types of intellectual property, as well as patent appeals and post-issuance procedures.
Andrew has successfully represented companies of all sizes, from large corporations to startups, offering not only expert patent preparation and prosecution services but also strategic counsel on IP portfolio management. His approach focuses on aligning intellectual property strategies with business goals, including innovative filing, enforcement strategies, and overall IP-driven growth. Andrew’s deep understanding of both the scientific and legal landscapes, combined with his insight into business strategy, uniquely positions him to protect and leverage groundbreaking advancements in the life sciences sector, helping clients maximize the value of their intellectual property assets.
Before transitioning to law, Andrew used his degree in chemical engineering from Drexel University to work as a developmental and analytical chemist at Johnson Matthey specializing in fuel cell catalyst development, and as a chemical engineer in petrochemical refining operations. This experience has provided him with a solid foundation in research and development and in various areas of chemical engineering, including petrochemical processing, wastewater treatment, and dentifrice manufacture and formulation, and afforded him the opportunity to be named on a number of patent applications as the inventor. This diverse experience fostered deep technical expertise with a strategic approach to intellectual property management. Combining that past practical experience with his six years as a patent examiner and a primary examiner at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, Andrew has developed a high level of experience in the chemicals and materials sector. That includes engineered materials such as alloys, composites, polymers, gas turbine systems, coating technologies, HVAC systems, refrigerants, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and specialty chemicals. He also possesses experience in software technologies, particularly as utilized in manufacturing, such as control systems. During his time at the USPTO, Andrew examined patents in the chemical arts related to metallurgy and coatings, including superalloy compositions, high-temperature coatings, and conversion coating technologies.
With over 20 years of advising clients, ranging from large manufacturing companies to biotech startups, Andrew provides extensive IP portfolio management and strategic counsel on filing, enforcement, and monetization strategies.
